Q: What inspired you or led you to your current career?
A: Well, I’ve always loved to help people, and I love to clean and keep everything nice and neat. I enjoy walking through people’s houses to see what I can do for them. Customers look for housekeeping services for many reasons. They may not be able to clean their house because they are busy… hard workers. Some people may have children involved with sports or afterschool activities. They have no time or energy left to keep a tidy house at the end of a long day. I am also passionate about helping people that are handicapped or elderly and not able to physically clean their own houses. I’ve cleaned for elderly clients who live by themselves and have nobody to talk to. Sometimes they just want you to sit with them and be a companion. It breaks my heart to have to leave them because they need that, but of course I have to continue on with my own life as well.
Q: How long have you been in this career?
A: Since I moved to this country from Cali, Colombia to New York City in 1987. Then when I moved to New Jersey, I managed an apartment building. I had to clean the apartments when they were empty and also paint them. So I’ve been doing this for a long time. I did that for 10 years before I moved here to Greenville in 2004.
Q: What do you enjoy most about what you do?
A: I love to see the excitement of the people after I clean their houses, because they feel much better (even psychologically) when their environment is clean and organized. That’s another service my sister and I can do. We can help people declutter and organize their homes.
Q: What do you think sets your services apart from other Housekeeping service providers?
A: As the owner, I like to do the cleaning myself. Other housekeeping companies hire staff. There is nobody to check behind them to make sure they do a thorough job and that the customer is satisfied. I work with my sister but I always go over everything before leaving. Not everybody does that. Sometimes people think because something already looks clean, it is clean and they don’t have to clean it so they skip over it. However, I go over everything. It’s my reputation and they can trust me. I like to do my job the right way. I offer competitive prices, but there is something else that I can do that most companies won’t. I will work with customers based on what they can afford to pay. We can negotiate together which services are most important to them that meet their needs and budget. I can help them…. and they can help me by referring me to others to help me grow my business.
Q: What did you do prior to this career?
A: I’ve always maintained my housekeeping business even if only part-time; but some people may recognize me from when I worked as a cashier at Publix.
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in the Golden Strip area?
A: I met this guy named Fred Munroe. He was a customer I met when working for Publix. He loves to play with the cashiers like handing them his check, but then really not to give it to them. He would pull it back again. He just loves to play around. He’s an older man and he lives by himself. I started cleaning his house and sitting with him after I finished cleaning. He would tell me all kinds of interesting stories about his life. I don’t know if he’s still alive. I want to go and visit him.
Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: Titanic. I could watch that movie over and over again.
Q: What advice would you give a crowd of people?
A: Be Happy!
Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: I want to jump, parachute out of a plane.
Q: What is your favorite genre of music?
A: Salsa and Country Music.
Q: Do you have any favorite hobbies?
A: I love to dance. Prior to Covid-19, my husband and I used to go out to Hispanic disco’s and dance. We haven’t been able to do that since the pandemic hit.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about the Golden Strip area?
A: I just love this town. Something called me to come down here ever since my first visit to come see some friends. My husband and I were looking for a house in New Jersey and I told my husband, “You know what? I want to buy a house in Greenville!” Something just called me here.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?
A: I hope to have grown my business even further and have obtained more stability.
Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
A: I love to sing Mariachi. I don’t play any mariachi instruments right now, but I have a guitar and would really like to learn to play it.
Q: What 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
A: Peaceful, Happiness, and Family.
Q: Do you have a charity or organization that you are passionate about?
A: I would love to be able to start my own charity organization. I want to bring food and help be a resource for the Hispanic Community. We live in the greatest country in the world but we have so many families out there that have nothing to eat right now.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: In my spare time, right now, I take care of my grandbaby. He’s three years old and he’s such a smart boy.
Q: Do you have any pets or cute pet stories to share?
A: I’m an animal lover. So every place I go to work, if they have pets they just come to me. It’s like they always come up and say, “Good morning!” That’s what I think anyway. They love me for some reason.
Q: Who else would you like to see nominated as a Face of the Golden Strip?
A: The Italian family that owns Luna Rosa Gelato Cafe in Mauldin. I love that family. They are hard workers.
